As women get older our hormones tend to fluctuate up and down and become erratic. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone start declining and can create a negative effect on a women’s well being and mental health. These hormones act as messengers in our body and influence everything from metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, energy, mental health, sleep, bone health, and much more. Some women experience symptoms in our late 30s or early to mid 40s. These symptoms can last anywhere from just a few months to 10-12 years. This is known as perimenopause. The goal of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is to restore and stabilize these hormone levels and ease symptoms.
Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone. You are considered menopausal if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual cycle. On average, this occurs at age 52, but can occur much earlier or later.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a treatment used to correct hormonal deficiencies. The goal is to restore hormone levels and improve symptoms. Bioidentical hormones are identical in structure to human hormones, made from plant or soy materials, and usually safer with less side effects than synthetic hormones (traditional hormone therapy). Synthetic hormones are made from synthetics, chemicals, or animal hormones. Their molecular structure is slightly different than human hormones and therefore carry a slightly higher risk of side effects and potential complications.
